The world of botany has just changed forever. After an expedition to the mystical Chinese forests, scientists are proudly announcing they have discovered a new fungus.
The specimen is significantly larger than any other type of previously discovered fungus, which caught the scientists’ eyes immediately.
Now, the researchers are hard at work in the lab, determined to learn more about their unique find.
Chinese Scientists Report D-Rex Can Grow a Foot and a Half

Science Daily reports that scientists in China uncovered something new and extraordinary. The team discovered a giant fungus, which has reproductive parts that are capable of growing up to 20 inches and weighing nearly five pounds. They’ve dubbed the species “Dianjunus rex,” or “D-rex” for short.
“This remarkable species represents a new fungal family, Dianjunaceae, and provides a rare window into the evolution of extreme fungal body forms,” Dr. Indunil C. Senanayake with China’s Germplasm Bank of Wild Species of the Kunming Institute of Botany declared.
Scientists Believe the Fungus Might Have Resulted from Environmental Catastrophe
Though scientists still have much to learn from the specimen, they’re researching more about its ancient evolution. By using the “molecular clock” technique, they determined the fungus’ lineage first emerged around 65 million years ago. Just one million years prior, there was a mass extinction that wiped the planet of non-avian dinosaurs and many more animals and plants.
Now, researchers are looking to uncover the link between environmental changes and the fungus’ origins.
“This timing raises an intriguing possibility. After the mass extinction, forests experienced dramatic changes, including the sudden availability of large amounts of dead plant material,” Senanayake added. “For wood-associated decomposing fungi, such environmental disruption may have created new ecological opportunities.”
There Are Still Many Unknowns Surrounding D-Rex

For now, scientists still aren’t entirely sure why D-rex is able to grow to such a tremendous size. Scientists immediately spotted the fungus, which was larger than nearby specimens by leaps and bounds.
“A fruiting body which towers above surrounding vegetation and debris could have better dispersal of spores by wind in dense forests. However, such a large structure requires substantial energy investment, suggesting that this strategy likely evolved only where the ecological benefits outweighed the costs,” Senanayake suggested.
After finding D-rex, Chinese research teams believe they might find more undiscovered wonders in the forests. Without a doubt, this is a monumental discovery in the botany world.
“This region combines exceptional habitat heterogeneity, climatic stability, and complex biotic interactions that promote fungal diversification. Historically, however, fungal diversity in these ecosystems has been underestimated due to logistical difficulties in field sampling, the seasonal and cryptic nature of fungal fruiting, and a historical emphasis on economically important fungi,” Senanayake added.
