U.S. Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat who’s represented the state of Connecticut since 2006, originally as a Representative and then as a Senator beginning in 2012, has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke on October 31, 2026, per the Associated Press.
Murphy, 53, began experiencing numbness in his arm while attending his son’s hockey game on Halloween, according to a statement on November 1 from Murphy’s chief of staff, Allison Herwitt. News of his medical emergency has prompted an outpouring of concern from fellow politicians.
President Donald Trump Comments on Senator Chris Murphy’s Surprising Stroke

Herwitt’s statement said that Murphy “was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had experienced a stroke,” noting that the senator was transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for further monitoring and that he is “responding well to treatment.”
“The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” Herwitt added, but she did not share details on the type of stroke Murphy suffered, the severity, or an estimated timeline for his discharge from the hospital.
On November 1, President Donald Trump said he was “really surprised” after learning about Murphy’s medical emergency.
CNN reported that when Trump was asked whether he planned to reach out to Murphy, he said, “At the right time, I would. Certainly we don’t like to hear a thing like that. I just heard about it inside, and he’s a pretty young guy, so I was a little surprised to hear it. No, nobody wants to have that.”
Senator Chris Murphy’s Fellow Politicians React With Concern

Many other politicians, from both sides of the aisle, shared well-wishes for Murphy, including Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, who experienced a stroke during his 2022 Senate campaign.
“As someone who survived a near-fatal stroke, I understand all too well how much this impacts your life,” Fetterman tweeted. “My family is rooting for Chris and his family for a full and speedy recovery.”
Fetterman has spoken publicly about the challenges of his own recovery and uses adaptive technology, including live-captioning tools, to assist with auditory processing during Senate proceedings.
Many other senators offered their well wishes via social media, including Wisconsin Democrat Tammy Baldwin, Minnesota Democrat Amy Klobuchar, Iowa Republican Chuck Grassley, New Jersey Democrat Andy Kim, and Florida Republican Rick Scott.
Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont also said in a statement, “Just two days ago, I was with Senator Chris Murphy doing what he loves most: encouraging Connecticut residents to make their voices heard and vote on Tuesday. There is no stronger advocate for our democracy, and no one who fights harder for the people of this state.”
“Chris is a great friend to Connecticut and to me personally,” the Governor continued, “and Annie and I are keeping him and his family in our prayers. I am sure that he will be walking across the state again very soon, and we will all be cheering him on.”
