Ever since making his debut in the pages of Detective Comics back in 1939, Batman has become an iconic figure in pop culture, a vigilante superhero defending fictional Gotham City against its criminal elements.

Now, a mysterious masked figure has captured the imaginations of London residents by performing good deeds throughout the city while costumed as the legendary Dark Knight.

‘Batman’s London’

Known as “London’s Batman,” the mysterious masked figure was first spotted on September 22, when he launched an Instagram account and posted his first video, filmed with the famed London Eye as a backdrop.

“London, I am your Batman, and I am here to save this city,” the masked man states. “For too long, we’ve been left without a hero. Completely forgotten, but no more. I will be the hero London deserves. Tell me your problems and I will make them go away.”

Since then, the self-proclaimed London’s Batman has been seen in various parts of London performing random acts of kindness, ranging from filling potholes to paying for people’s fuel at gas stations (one Londoner told the Times he estimated that the masked hero gave away more ,£3,500 — or nearly US$4700 — throughout the day).

‘People Are Struggling’

Not surprisingly, the mysterious caped crusader has built up a sizeable social media following as he continues to make unannounced appearances throughout the British capital in order to offer his help to strangers.

Refusing to reveal his true identity, London’s Batman invited BBC London to interview him, under cloak-and-dagger conditions that included only a time and location.

He explained why he was choosing to remain anonymous. “It’s not about who I am underneath. It’s what I do that defines me,” he said.

Asked why he felt London needed its own Batman, he responded: “I believe that anyone can be a hero. I want to show the good in London. People are struggling and I want to help them.”

His Secret Identity

Despite all the secrecy, much speculation has been floated about the true identity of this secret figure.

In fact, a widespread belief has emerged online that London’s Batman is actually Niko Omilana, a prank-pulling YouTuber who’d previously gained notoriety for stunt videos that have gone viral, particularly when he ran for prime minister.

Omilana, however, has flat-out denied that speculation. “BBC, just to tell you, I’m not Batman,” he said in a voicemail.

However, content creator Roy Patrick pointed out some similarities between Omilana and Batman. “When he used to run for prime minister, he went round filling up potholes, trying to make a change,” Patrick told BBC London. “It could be him, it may not be him. He might have got someone else to go and dress up for him. These are all just conspiracies but, for me and for a lot of people, it’s giving Niko Omilana.”

‘A Better Tomorrow’

Social media expert Rhea Freeman explained how London’s Batman had managed to generate such a massive social media following in a relatively brief period of time.

“I think these videos are successful for a few reasons. One, there is a fully-grown human dressed as Batman in the middle of London. But also it is positive,” Freeman observed. “It’s very much tapping into the current times. Fuel is incredibly expensive. There is a cost of living crisis. I think it is shining a spotlight on things a lot of us are feeling.”

As for why he was doing what he’d been doing, London’s Batman insisted his motivations were simple.

“It’s to help London and give them hope for a better tomorrow,” he said. “I just want to help make the place better. Unite the people.”
