When Democrats take control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in January, Democrat congressman Robert Garcia will become the head of the House’s powerful Committee on Oversight and Reform.

On the morning of Wednesday, November 4, Garcia issued a brief statement that should strike fear into the hearts of members of the Trump organization.

‘Lawyer Up’

“Today, Rep. Robert Garcia, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, released the following statement after Democrats secured a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives,” reads a press release from the committee.

“Following this win, Garcia will become Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, where he has vowed to take on the Trump Crime Family, corporate corruption, DHS and ICE abuses, and the cover-up of the Epstein files. His statement can be found below.”

That statement consists of just two words: “Lawyer up.”

Government’s Watchdog

The oversight committee serves as a sort of watchdog within the U.S. government, and has wide-ranging authority to issue subpoenas, request documents and call witnesses.

Prior to the midterm elections that saw Democrats capture majorities in both the House and the Senate, Garcia issued a stark warning about what would happen if such a scenario were to unfold, promising the committee would dig deep into corruption allegations involving President Donald Trump and his family, abuses committed by ICE and the Department of Homeland Security, corporate corruption and the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.

According to Garcia, he’s ready to hit the ground running as soon as he takes control of the committee.

“We’re not starting from scratch here,” Garcia told Punchbowl News on the day of the midterms. “There’s an enormous amount of work that has happened that is public, and there’s an enormous amount of work that’s happened that we’ve been quietly working on for many months.”

Among the first targets Garcia identified are “Trump crypto schemes,” “the ‘Red Wedding’ of Don Jr.” that was financed by a Russian oligarch, and why Trump family members such as Jared Kushner are “sitting on boards and getting contracts.”

Garcia also promised to take “quick action” on investigating “the pay-to-play schemes and allegations around [former DHS Secretary] Kristi Noem and Corey Lewandowski,” and will also “launch right into having real public hearings” on the Epstein scandal that will “center the survivors.”

Garcia also explained “anyone who has been in bed with the Trumps” will have “no choice but to respond to our questions.”

While Garcia contended he expected resistance from the White House, if not outright stonewalling, he declared, “But we also have real important tools, especially in a majority. We have the power to go to the courts on behalf of the House. We have the power of contempt, and not just criminal contempt, but civil contempt that goes to the courts. We have the power of subpoena.”

Added Garcia: “People are struggling because of Donald Trump’s corruption. And so if we’re really going to take on the affordability crisis, we’ve got to take on the corruption of the Trumps because they’re stealing people’s money, their labor.”

Targeting Elon Musk

Another big target for the committee will be billionaire Tesla CEO Elon Musk, with the committee to investigate the sprawling actions he took in the early days of the second Trump administration when he was appointed head of the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

“We definitely have a lot of questions about Elon Musk’s role in DOGE and it is something we plan to investigate,” Sara Guerrero, a spokesperson for the California congressman, told Politico back in October.

Garcia’s fellow California representative, Zoe Lofgren, issued a statement laying out a laundry list of allegations. “Elon Musk and his DOGE cronies stirred up chaos, ruined careers, and played a large role in illegal grant cancellations and firings of civil servants,” said Lofgren. “He helped orchestrate the systematic destruction of government programs and services over the last nearly two years. The sheer number of conflicts of interest are astounding.”

Added one member of the oversight committee who asked to remain anonymous, “I think DOGE was the original sin. A third of the committee is lawyers and we see the lawlessness, the intentional violations of the law. I certainly hope that Elon Musk and DOGE get brought in. No one should be above the law.”

Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey summed up the general consensus among Democrats when he wrote via X.com, “They are going to need to plant to forests for all of the subpoenas we’ll be printing.”
