The financial world is reeling after the shocking theft of $6.3 billion worth of cryptocurrency from a major exchange.
Sky News reports that hackers targeted Binance, described as “one of the world’s biggest platforms for trading digital assets,” in an attack that one industry insider likened to “the largest bank heist in human history.”
The Largest Crypto Hack Ever
According to TRM Labs, a blockchain intelligence firm specializing in tracking the crypto industry, the heist was engineered by an elite North Korean hacking outfit known as TraderTraitor, with the group able to pull off the stunning theft in less than 20 minutes.
Due to the size of the amount stolen, this is officially the largest crypto hack ever, surpassing a hack last year that stole $1.5 billion from the Bybit exchange.
Binance co-CEO Richard Teng said the company’s “initial investigation suggests this security incident may have started with a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop,” in a post he shared via X.
“To be clear: the attacker did not simply use one engineer’s permissions, and this was not a single ‘one-click’ action. It involved a more complex attack process,” Teng added.
“Our investigation has not attributed responsibility to any individual,” the post continued. “Our team hasn’t stopped. We’re working closely with law enforcement to ensure the matter is handled appropriately.”
‘An Extraordinary Hack’
Ari Redbord, chief policy officer for TRM Labs, told Sky News that the scope of the hack is unlike anything ever seen before.
“This is an extraordinary hack, for its size and for the response… Few financial systems have ever shown a theft of this scale,” Redbord said.
According to Redbord, hackers were able to move billions of dollars in cryptocurrency across eight blockchain networks within approximately 15 minutes, which has led investigators to believe that those behind the attack had spent more than 36 hours meticulously laying the groundwork to ensure a lightning-fast hack.
“The theft shows how exposed the system is to sophisticated attackers moving at a speed we have never seen,” he added.
Meanwhile, FBI sources have linked TraderTraitor to the previous attack on Bybit. If that is indeed the case, it would mean the group has collectively stolen nearly $8 billion worth of crypto.
Risk of ‘Crossover Contagion’
Crypto journalist Izabella Kaminska, editor of publication The Blind Spot, told Sky News that the hack “appears to be a highly sophisticated and well-rehearsed attack,” and arrives amid grwing concern that AI agents will soon be able to exploit vulnerabilities within financial systems worldwide.
“The reality is and always was that the vast majority of crypto platforms — and in some cases assets too — are just as structurally centralized as conventional banking platforms,” Kaminska told Sky News, noting that when crypto is stolen there is no remedy for victims. “Unlike banks, however, when these systems get hacked or become insolvent, there is no recourse to a lender of last resort or deposit insurance fund. Depositors are on their own,” she added.
While Kaminska stated only time would tell if this extraordinary hack posed an “existential threat” to the crypto industry as a whole, she cautioned that the increasing interconnectivity between traditional Wall Street banking and the world of digital assets could be problematic for the global financial system.
“The crossover contagion risk is no longer zero,” she said.
