Elizabeth Holmes’ life outside prison is drawing renewed attention with the release of “You Can See Everything,” a documentary that offers a look at the former Theranos CEO and her partner, Billy Evans.

In the nearly three-hour film, Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim follow Holmes and Evans in the days leading up to her surrender in May 2023. Holmes was convicted of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud in January 2022 and sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison that November.

The film remained largely under wraps for three years before its first teaser was released.

Although Holmes became widely known through the rise and fall of Theranos, Evans has largely remained outside the public eye. Here are five facts to know about him.

1. He Comes from a Hotel-Owning Family

Evans is the heir to a family hotel business. His grandparents founded Evans Hotels in 1953, and the company operates three properties in the San Diego area, according to The New York Times.

The family business has established a presence in the hospitality industry, giving Evans a background outside the technology and health care sectors associated with Holmes.

2. He Studied Economics at MIT

Evans attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2010 to 2015, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in economics, per PEOPLE.

He also studied Chinese language and literature at Fudan University in Shanghai during his undergraduate years.

His professional experience has included work at companies such as Luminar Technologies, a business that developed technology for autonomous vehicles, according to the New York Post.

3. He Leads a Blood-Testing Startup

Evans is the CEO of Haemanthus, a startup developing technology for health testing. The company describes its work on LinkedIn as developing “the world’s first AI-native sensors for health.”

Its technology aims to capture thousands of biomarkers simultaneously. The company attracted attention in May 2025 when it addressed comparisons to Theranos, the blood-testing company founded by Holmes.

In a statement posted to its official X account, Haemanthus said it was not “Theranos 2.0” and that Holmes had “zero involvement.”

The company also distinguished its approach from Theranos, writing, “Our approach is fundamentally different.”

4. He Met Holmes at a Charity Event

Holmes and Evans were introduced by a mutual friend at a charity event in 2017. The pair reportedly spent three hours talking.

In a joint interview with The New York Times in 2023, Holmes reflected on the circumstances surrounding their relationship.

“It had been two years of all this stuff written about me, and I think you get to know someone in a totally different way when you walk in with that skepticism versus if you meet when everything is sunshine and roses,” she said. “That allowed us to get to know each other in a really deep way.”

The couple got engaged in August 2018.

5. He and Holmes Have Two Children

Holmes and Evans share two children. Their first child, a son named William Holmes Evans, was born on July 10, 2021, in Redwood City, California.

Holmes’ pregnancy delayed her trial, which had already been postponed multiple times amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In an interview with PEOPLE in February 2025, Holmes addressed speculation that having children was an attempt to avoid prison or gain public sympathy.

“I know how the optics look, but I always wanted to be a mother,” she said. “I truly did not think I would ever be convicted or found guilty. I kept talking to my lawyers and they also assured me we would never get this far.”

She added, “It wasn’t planned and I can’t worry about what others think. It’s just when the timing happened.”
