Few people book a vacation rental hoping to spend the last hour of the trip stripping beds and scrubbing dishes. Airbnb is finally stepping in.

On October 20, the popular vacation rental platform officially announced that it is introducing new house rules that will prevent hosts from requiring guests to complete certain cleaning tasks, including stripping beds, washing dishes, and taking trash off the property.

The changes will take effect on Friday, November 20, 2026, and apply to all reservations booked on or after that date.

According to the BBC, the announcement follows years of complaints from travelers who were expected to clean their rentals despite paying additional cleaning fees.

However, not everyone is pleased, as several Airbnb hosts have raised concerns about the potential financial impact.

What Are Airbnb’s New House Rules for 2026?

Under the updated policy, Airbnb hosts can select seven standard house rules and add additional reasonable requests.

However, the company says guests generally cannot be required to perform tasks that take significant time or effort or would ordinarily be handled by professional cleaners.

The restricted checkout requests include:

  • Stripping beds before checkout
  • Washing and putting away dishes/loading the dishwasher
  • Taking trash to an offsite disposal location
  • Completing other time-consuming cleaning tasks typically handled by cleaners

The changes matter most for guests who already pay cleaning fees.

Airbnb will also prohibit hosts from imposing their own fines for failing to follow checkout requests.

What Can Airbnb Hosts Still Ask Guests to Do?

The new policy does not eliminate all housekeeping expectations. Hosts may still request simple tasks, such as placing used dishes in the sink or securing doors before leaving.

Airbnb says it weighs the listing type and local factors when deciding whether a request is reasonable, and it may grant exceptions. For example, a host in bear country can still ask guests to put trash in an animal-proof container.

According to Airbnb’s announcement, a host in an area with drought restrictions can ask guests to keep showers short.

Guests must also follow reasonable rules involving pets, smoking, noise, and overnight visitors.

Airbnb may permit exceptions depending on local circumstances, including restrictions on water usage during droughts.

The platform is also making house rules more visible during booking and in reservation reminders.

“House rules help guests understand what hosts expect, but we’ve heard from our community that they can be confusing, onerous and hard to manage,” Airbnb told the BBC.

Airbnb Hosts React Angrily to New Cleaning Rules

While the changes may be welcomed by travelers, some property owners have criticized the restrictions as unclear; not every host is cheering.

Nadia Di Martino, who runs three listings from her Kirwin home in Townsville, Australia, called the changes “infuriating,” ABC reported.

Hundreds of hosts have criticized the new rules on Airbnb’s community forum.

“I think that many hosts will either have to increase their prices and then pay someone else to do the whole cleaning,” Di Martino said.

She cleans her rentals herself and does not charge a cleaning fee, but she asks guests to wash their dishes before they leave, according to ABC.

Other hosts warned that additional housekeeping responsibilities could increase operating costs. A South Carolina host named Kendra argued that smaller property owners could be particularly affected.

Some hosts have also suggested they may reconsider their listings or raise prices to cover additional cleaning expenses.

When Will Airbnb’s New Checkout Rules Take Effect?

The updated requirements will apply to bookings made beginning Friday, November 20. Reservations booked before that date remain subject to the previous policy. Guests are still expected to leave properties reasonably clean and avoid damage or excessive mess.

Airbnb said hosts whose requests violate the policy may receive warnings or be required to update their listings. Repeated violations could also affect how prominently properties appear in search results.

For travelers, the changes mean clearer expectations before booking and fewer unexpected cleaning demands when it’s time to head home.
