Hours after news of Kyle Kennedy’s death broke, her aunt, Rory Kennedy, shared a touching tribute to her late niece.

“Kyle was a wonder – as mother of her beautiful boys, as a daughter, a sister, a friend. And as an educator, too,” Rory told People in a statement on Tuesday, October 20. She described Kyle as “funny and fierce and much beloved by all of us.”

“She will be deeply missed,” Rory — the 11th and youngest child of Senator Robert F. Kennedy and wife Ethel Kennedy — added.

Kyle Kennedy’s Death

Kyle, the daughter of Michael LeMoyne Kennedy and Victoria Denise Gifford, died at the age of 42 on September 21 at her home in Westwood, Massachusetts.

“Blessed with a formidable intellect, dry wit, and beauty, she will be remembered for her devotion to her children Conor, Josephine, and Declan, and her support for educational reform for disadvantaged children and for people living with disabilities,” her obituary read.

A cause of death has not yet been determined; the manner of her death is under investigation.

Kyle was born in Washington, D.C., and was one of Bobby and Ethel’s 34 grandchildren. She attended Georgetown University, where she earned a history degree. She went on to earn a Master of Science in Early Education from Pace University, and a Master of Education in Education Policy and Management from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education, her obituary confirmed.

After graduating, she joined Teach for America and taught for two years in the New York City public school system.

In 2020, at just 36 years old, Kyle suffered a severe spinal cord injury that resulted in long-term paralysis. She would use her experience to advocate for others living with disabilities. She testified at the Massachusetts State House during a hearing on discrimination in disabled health care.

Kyle is survived by her two sons, Conor, 12, and Declan, 10, whom she shared with ex-husband Liam. The pair also shared a daughter, Josie, who was Conor’s twin. Josie died a few days after birth.

Kennedy Curse

The Kennedy family has been plagued with tragedy for decades, including the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. JFK’s brother and Kyle’s granfather, Robert F. Kennedy, was assassinated five years later.

Two decades prior, their sister, Rosemary Kennedy, suffered a botched lobotomy that left her permanently incapacitated in 1941. Their brother, Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., was killed when his bomber exploded during World War II. He was 29. Another sister, Kathleen Kennedy, died in a plane crash in France in 1948.

Similarly, JFK’s son, John F. Kennedy Jr., and his wife, Caroline Bessette were killed when their small plane crashed off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. John was piloting when the aircraft went down.

David Kennedy — the son of Robert F. Kennedy — and Saoirse Kennedy Hill, RFK’s granddaughter, both died of accidental drug overdoses.

In December 2025, Tatiana Schlossberg, the daughter of Caroline Kennedy and Edwin Schlossberg, and granddaughter of JFK, died after a fierce battle with acute myeloid leukemia. She was just 35 years old.
