Jalen Hurts will likely be sidelined for the remainder of the 2026 season after doctors discovered blood clots in his lungs, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter report.
Hurts will undergo treatment with blood thinners, with the timeline for his recovery said to be at least three months.
Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, released a statement with the Philadelphia Eagles, saying that Hurts has deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli. That means the clot, which had been in his leg, had traveled up to his lung. The quarterback is “clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations,” according to the statement.
However, he is not allowed to participate in football activities because he is on anticoagulation medication.
“Jalen’s prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery,” the statement added. “We anticipate that he will have the opportunity to resume contact football activities when off the blood thinners. In the meantime, he will remain active around the team and continue to condition. More importantly, we anticipate that he will have no long-term effects.”
Jalen Hurts Played In The Game After His Diagnosis
Hurts was initially diagnosed with superficial left calf vein thrombosis on October 10 in London, before the Eagles’ matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He ultimately played in that game.
He arrived at the hospital at 4 a.m. that morning of the game and did not sleep the night before because he was told that sleeping posed health risks associated with the clot.
But he underwent an ultrasound on Wednesday, which is when doctors discovered there was movement in the blood clot. As a result, he missed Philadelphia’s Sunday matchup against the Carolina Panthers, which ended in a 25-14 Eagles loss. He has been placed on injured reserve, but the quarterback isn’t expected back on the field this season.
The Eagles have Tanner McKee on the roster, who started in Sunday’s loss, as well as having recently signed Joe Milton from the Cowboys’ practice squad.

“Over the last few days, Jalen Hurts has received comprehensive medical evaluations by physician experts. In the interest of transparency, we are providing additional information on the diagnosis and treatment plan related to his condition.
“Jalen was initially diagnosed by specialists in London with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis. After further testing and monitoring, the current diagnosis is a deep vein thrombosis as well as bilateral pulmonary emboli. He is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations. His treatment should only involve anticoagulation (i.e. blood thinners). During this time, he will not be allowed to participate in any contact activities, including football.
“Jalen’s prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery. We anticipate that he will have the opportunity to resume contact football activities when off the blood thinners. In the meantime, he will remain active around the team and continue to condition. More importantly we anticipate that he will have no long-term effects.
“We are thinking of Jalen and looking forward to a strong recovery.”
