Flying cars sound like something out of a dystopian movie or the Jetsons.
But a video released by Elon Musk on October 15, 2026, makes them appear to be a close reality. “Turns out the future does have flying cars,” Musk wrote, sharing a video that showed a Tesla Roadster prototype performing some breathtaking moves.
In sort of a space-age take on doing doughnuts, the car is shown doing flips and spins in the air over a semi truck and row of cars before landing on its tires. “Let’s take it to the limits, and way past the limits,” Musk said of the Roadster.
When will the flying car be available for purchase? Not until 2028, at least, as that’s when it’s entering production. It reaches a top speed of over 230 miles per hour, Reuters reported.
The Elon Musk ‘Flying Car’ Is ‘Equipped With Thrusters’
The Musk “flying car” video quickly went viral on, where else? X, where it had 52 million views in just 18 hours. People immediately created memes when they weren’t declaring the car video “amazing.”
Its secret is that it is equipped with thrusters, according to CBS News, which reported that the reveal was made during a live streamed event at the SpaceX facility.
Another page shared a video of David Hasselhoff in a flying car for the 1982 television series Knight Rider, writing, “Elon Musk just made Turbo Boost a reality. A bunch of guys my age have been waiting our whole lives for this.” Musk responded, “One of my favorite shows as a kid!”
Another video posted by Musk shows the Roadster flipping in the air off of a building.
Elon Musk Declared That the New Tesla Roadster is ‘Better Than Any James Bond Car’
During the livestream event, Musk explained his vision for the car.
“This is the culmination of incredible work… to make something you haven’t seen in any movie, that is better than any James Bond car. I’ve never seen anything like this. When I suggested this to the team, I thought, ‘Am I crazy’?” Musk said in a video he posted on X. “Things kind of built upon themselves.”
He added, “Success is not guaranteed. I mean that. It will probably work. But if it doesn’t work, we’re at a safe distance. Excitement is 100% guaranteed.”
According to CNBC, the car is a “next-generation Roadster electric sports car” that emerged after “almost 10 years of missed deadlines.”
It uses SpaceX “thruster technology to ‘hover’ in the air and perform ‘kick flips,'” CNBC noted, confirming that the car won’t be produced until 2028. It’s not clear yet how much money it will cost.
In one of the videos, the Roadster hung onto the underside of a curved ramp without falling off. “Real life, baby,” Tesla wrote, sharing a video of the vehicle on Instagram.
It took eight years after it was announced for the Roadster to be unveiled, according to NBC. Musk told the audience during the livestream that the demonstration was “was not AI or SI.”
