Apple’s iPhone Duo had a rush on its first morning. Preorders vanished within minutes, and buyers who got in are now waiting until late January.

Yahoo Finance reported Friday, October 16, that preorders for the $1,999 iPhone Duo sold out shortly after they opened.

Delivery estimates had been set around the phone’s Friday, October 23, launch date, but they quickly slipped to late January. The rush points to strong interest in a device that marks one of Apple’s biggest iPhone lineup changes in years. Apple unveiled the Duo in September.

How Quickly Did the iPhone Duo Sell Out?

Preorders opened at 8 a.m. ET on Friday. Within minutes, estimated delivery dates had moved past launch day.

The Next Web reported that about half an hour after orders opened, Apple’s U.S. store showed a January 25 delivery date for every model, from 256 GB to 2 TB.

Launch-day stock at Apple’s retail stores also ran out almost as soon as preorders began.

“It’s been 3 minutes, and it’s sold out at every store around the NYC/CT area,” Creativestrat analyst Max Weinbach wrote on X.

Apple has not said how many units it had available, so the sellout alone does not show the full size of demand. The company did call demand “nothing short of extraordinary,” CNBC reported.

Wall Street analyst Dan Ives called the early response encouraging.

Apple’s stock closed up 0.43% at $343.46 during a broad tech selloff, 24/7 Wall St. reported.

How Much Does Apple’s Foldable iPhone Cost?

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 with 256 GB of storage.

That is $800 more than the $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro, Apple’s current flagship. According to AppleInsider, the top 2 TB model costs $3,199.

Closed, the Duo has a 5.4-inch exterior display. Open it, and a 7.6-inch folding screen takes over, with a nano-texture finish that helps cut glare.

What Cameras Does the iPhone Duo Have?

The back has wide and ultrawide cameras, and the front uses Apple’s Center Stage camera. A FaceTime camera sits under the main folding screen.

It lacks a telephoto option, which some shoppers may notice at this price.

Could the iPhone Duo Bring Foldables Into the Mainstream?

Apple is entering a category Samsung and Google have spent years refining.

Foldables still make up a small slice of the smartphone market.

IDC projected that manufacturers would ship about 20.6 million foldables out of 1.25 billion smartphones in 2025. In a December report, the firm said the category should grow 30% in 2026 with Apple’s entry and make up over 10% of the smartphone market by value by 2029.

Ives believes Apple could accelerate that.

He projects about 10 million iPhone Duo sales over the next few quarters and up to 25 million in 2027. Counterpoint Research is more cautious, expecting about 6 million this year, The Next Web reported.

The launch is also one of the first big ones under CEO John Ternus, who took over September 1.

For shoppers hoping to get one near launch day, the hard part may simply be finding one.
